July Prompt

My wife and I always joke that at least once a summer we will get caught in a Boston rainstorm. One of my most vivid memories from our courtship period, actually – when we were living examples of that lovely fic trope “friends and/or roommates to lovers,” with lots of mutual pining and unresolved sexual tension – was an afternoon when we got caught in a cloudburst about half a mile from the apartment where we were living. Taking refuge under the overhang of a convenient storefront, we took stock of just how wet we were and I grew conscious of just how … transparent my roommate’s lovely embroidered natural linen shirt had instantly become. My overheated brain, perhaps charged with the electricity of the thunderstorm above us, immediately considered all of the narrative possibilities inherent in Arriving Home Wet and Toweling Off possibly With Assistance. 

None of that happened, that day – though we eventually resolved the unresolved sexual tension and discovered that both of us had very much  WANTED it to have. Happened. With the assistance of, you know, the weather.

So this is my prompt to all of you this month of July: Write a fic in which some weather event precipitates a relationship breakthrough. It can be any kind of weather – thunderstorm? hail? heatwave? tornado? hurricane? snowstorm? the lack of rain? a harsh sunburn? fog? flood? – and it can be any  kind of breakthrough. Will fog cause your pair to lose their way and pull off the road and “share a bed” for the night? Will a thunderstorm wake one of your pair and require cuddles and reassurance? Will a heatwave lead to skinny dipping? Will a winter cold snap require sharing a duvet? Whatever your narrative, write it up and add it to the Twelve In Twelve 2016 collection on AO3. June was a quiet month … I hope to see more of you return in July!
